Development – Adding text to the images
When the photos had been illustrated i placed them into InDesign and placed them in alphabetical order to create a 28 page book including a front and back cover. I went over a few different typefaces in order to see what one stood out and worked best with the images, i came across a typeface online called ‘Gasalt’ which i used for the final print. The typeface is bold and clear to make it easy for a young audience to read. for the rest of the text i used the same but made smaller and changed the colour to a very pale grey colour that i felt went well against the white and black images. For the front and back cover i took one of the images and placed it into photoshop from there i took away the background and duplicated the hands i thought this gave a nice touch to the presentation of the book. For the back i did the same and worked with the shape of the hands to go with the lettering of my name.
Adding the illustrations to the photos
For this part i placed all of the images into illustrator and added the illustrations to each image. I had a set idea for most of the letters but some i found harder than others to come up with an illustration to reflect onto the word. On some i did just free and draw various lines and shapes built around the hand symbols but i feel in some ways they still reflect the words shown.
here is a list of the words and colours that go with them, when selecting what image to go with which word it was more of what looked right for the symbol. Like i said in my previous blog posts i photographed as many hand symbols as possible and selected from them which one fitted the book the most. The symbols where all done free hand with the blob brush tool the reason for using this and not the normal brush tool was too create smoother lines when drawing free hand. Once i had completed the images i saved them into high resolution PNGs and place them into InDesign where i will put the book together and place my text over the images.
Color selection for children’s book
these are the colours i have selected for my illustrations and text used within my children’s book. I wanted the colors to be bright and appealing to a younger audience. I debated using just a two color way system but it seemed more fun and relevant to use an array of colours. My plan is to use a different set of colours for each page to keep it constant but varied from page to page.
Hand symbols raw photos/contact sheets
Today i booked out a photography studio and photographed the hand symbols for my ABC book. I wanted to capture as many symbols as possible so i had a variety to choose from when editing and creating the book. When coming up with words for each letter i wanted to relate the book to ‘being a good human’ so the words i selected where positive but slightly more complex words than you would see in a very basic ABC book. I wanted the symbols to reflect on the words used for them i.e equality = someone shaking hands or love = making a heart shape symbol. The photos where taken on my own camera (canon 6D) I didn’t use any lighting just natural light given off from the room itself, i liked the natural look it gave the photos and giving it a slight shadow made the photos look more realistic. When uploaded i felt they looked much better in black and white, i also edited the contrast slightly to give it a mono tone look bringing out the black and white skin from the background.
